How cloud storage pricing works
Storage costs
Cloud providers charge per GB stored per month. Costs vary by storage class—hot storage for frequently accessed data costs more, while cold/archive storage for long-term backups is cheaper but has retrieval fees.
Data transfer
Egress (data transfer out) fees apply when downloading data from the cloud. These can be significant—some providers charge $0.08-0.12 per GB. Transfers between regions or to the internet typically incur charges, while uploads are usually free.
API operations
Every file operation—uploading, downloading, listing, or deleting—counts as an API request. Providers charge per thousand requests, with write operations (PUT/POST) typically costing more than read operations (GET/LIST).
Regional pricing
Storage costs vary by geographic region. US and European regions are typically cheaper, while Asia-Pacific, Middle East, and South America regions often have higher rates. Choose regions close to your users for better performance.
